Capture What Counts

(like my minions above)

My Story:

Back in '99 (wearing a younger man's clothes) I did the big move from Adelaide to Sydney. My goal was clear: to work hard, get experience, head home and capitalize on that experience. I gave myself one year. Six months into that plan I met a girl, 20 years later I'm still in Sydney, married with a house and two kids (and, yes, all with the same girl).

I've been an obsessive hobby photographer for most of my life. One day a friend asked me to help him shoot a wedding and the rest is history.

Photography has taken me all around Australia and overseas and I'm very happy (and lucky) to work alongside some of Sydney's finest wedding photographers and studios. I specialize in weddings, portraits, and event coverage (though there's not much I don't shoot).

How I Shoot:

I always have two aims with my all my shoots:

Candid and unscripted moments: For each shoot I make sure I get a variety of photos though my specialty is capturing candid and unscripted moments. The sincere smiles, spontaneous laughter, etc… I find that these are the images we always come back to and hold dearly.

For everyone to enjoy the day: I have a professional yet casual approach with my shoots that creates a relaxed atmosphere with no pressure. Here everyone can just be themselves and enjoy the day allowing us to capture some great moments.

I look forward to meeting with you.

Common Questions

What does "freelance" mean?
A "freelance" photographer is someone who shoots on-contract for a studio/photographer, the freelancer is not hired directly by the end client. Shooting on-contract is how I started in photography and is a work stream I maintain.

Who do you shoot for?
I'm lucky to work with a large range of award winning studios and photographers. Unfortunately I cannot reveal who they are due to non-disclosure agreements (this is standard).

Can I hire you directly?
Yes! Please see my Packages section for details and pricing.

You don't update your Instagram very often?
The majority of my professional work is on-contract with other studios and I cannot use the images taken as part of my own portfolio (understandably as they are not my clients).

Do you have any other work?
For those interested I post my personal work at:
flic.kr/smashingvase and Instagram @smashingvase.
Mostly travel pics, landscapes street photography and design projects I feel are worth sharing.

Why Flickr?
Flickr's community is more photographer focused and there no restrictions on aspect, size and image format.

How did you get into photography?
In my final year of high school I realized I didn't have any pictures of my friends. So one day I brought my happy-snap 35mm film camera to school and it never left my bag after that.

Do you do anything else?
I also undertake Real Estate Photography as well as work in graphic design and other creative fields, you can see my work at www.smashingvase.com
